Thai Thai Turns Up the Heat at KBIH

Our California associates — Alex Burkhardt and Kyle Niner — forwarded the following photos and recommendation of Eastern Sierra Regional Airport’s acclaimed Thai Thai restaurant.

On our way to Yosemite National Park for the Labor Day weekend, we stopped for lunch in Bishop California to find out if the hype surrounding Eastern Sierra Regional Airport’s Thai Thai restaurant were warranted. Spoiler alert: Thai Thai lives up to its reputation for delicious, authentic cuisine, reasonable prices and incredible views from the Sierra mountain foothills.

From the exterior, the small, nondescript terminal doesn’t reveal the culinary gem inside. Under the blazing midday sun – without a cloud above – the sky and mountains fused in brilliant hues of blue and purple over the scorched tarmac.

Once inside, we saw Thai Thai’s sign perched above a side door in the utilitarian lobby. We did notice – and certainly appreciated – a few unique aviation design elements such as the etched metal props used as way-finding signs for the bathrooms and pilot lounge.

We staked out a window seat overlooking the tarmac to take in the majestic Sierra mountains while deciding what to order.

The compact menu was packed with some of our favorite Thai dishes: Assorted curries, pad thai, satay … oh the choices!

We quickly settled for an all shrimp meal of spicy fried rice, green curry with shrimp and the Thai summer roll appetizer. The green curry was delicious — one of the best we’ve had in any restaurant – regardless of location. The spice was perfect – hot but not burning – and the flavors were outstanding.

We made quick work of the three dishes; delicious to the last bite! And – don’t judge – we left nothing but empty plates and a generous tip behind!

On our way out, we stopped to look at the map of KBIH’s planned improvements and admired some of the aerial and plane photos on display (Credit KBIH), vowing to return for lunch or dinner on a future visit to Yosemite or Mammoth Lakes.
